Kansas, Leftoverture Album Art

The word "Leftoverture" was created by combining the words "leftover" and "overture." The band had material leftover from rehearsals, recordings, and the like. I love the name. The album art is as interesting as the artwork on "Point of Know Return". This cover, however, was designed by Dave McMacken, an artist and very talented illustrator who hailed from Oregon.

Leftoverture is great art. The concept of the artwork is clearly influenced by the album title, "Leftoverture".  It sounds 15th century to me. It's a brilliant word. Amazing that one made-up word can evoke such a creative endeavor.

Take a look at the perspective of the walls behind the bearded gentleman. It's like a study in perspective in art class. The feather pen. The parchment paper. The confused look on his face. The red robe. All of which would have been used or worn way back in the 15th century.

There is that familiar Kansas logo. Fantastic use of shape and contrasting color to form the word Kansas. To me, Leftoverture is one of my favorite album covers. Hats off to Dave McMacken, and may he rest in peace.

Let's not forget that "Carry On My Wayward Son" and "The Wall" were both on this album!
